Week 3 - Study Strategies and Ethics
Part 1.
Of the topics I explored last week I believe the study practices of 'recite' and knowing 'where to study' are the two study strategies that I should focus on improving. Reciting is not only important as it forces you to take more time with the material, but it also directs you into engaging with it as well. Having to recall the information you study helps to solidify it into memory. Knowing where to work is a key component in having an effective study session. Separating yourself from distraction and finding what works for you to help with concentration guarantees the full time spent studying will be effective.
Part 2.
This week had a focus on the ethics of computer science, much of it regarding the future of AI. With the advancement of AI will come the pushing of boundaries and the exploration of practices never seen before. Artists, actors, and other creative careers have recently been threatened by the capabilities of new generative technology. I believe it is more important now than ever that we keep our humanity in mind as we dev into a rapidly advancing era of tech.
Part 3.
After reading "What every computer science major should know" I felt reassured as many of the topics covered I had either previously experimented with, or at least was aware of. Things like HTML, CSS, or Javascript are considered to be front end focused and the foundation of web design. Of those I have personally used HTML and CSS in my own practice projects. Other topics such as Scala and and Haskell I have not personally used, but have read about before and so have some previous knowledge.
Part 4.
Integrity is important for us all, as it is what ensures anything we say or do is reliable. To lack integrity means to lack accountability and trust. Without those core values, a person is not only cheating themselves, but those who may be working with them. As we grow into developers it is important to be able to rely on the people that make up our teams, and know that we can place our trust in them.
